Vision statement 2016

Posted on by Willem Steyn

Our vison is to make Bishops the most sought after independent cricketing school in SA!

In line with our vision we launched a number of initiatives over the past two years:

  1. Facilities

The new state of the art Steffan Coutts-Trotter Indoor Cricket Centre was completed mid-2013. This facility comprising of a hi-performance centre with four lanes. One lane will be used as a dedicated bowling-machine lane, with a workstation and TV screen on the rear wall for coaching analysis purposes.

The improvement of our cricket nets (turf and synthetic) has been completed. Synthetic landing areas replaced the old bully based landing areas and before the end of January we will once again boast turf nets.

Our next project is the construction of a turf pitch at Lutgensvale. This project is well under way and we are hoping to start with construction by the end of Augustus 2016.

  1. Coaching

Neil Carter is our Cricket Professional and will also manage the Steffan Coutts-Trotter Indoor Cricket Centre.  Neil is a seasoned professional cricketer having played 111 first class games, 177 List A games and 100 T20’s. He made his debut in the 1999/2000 season and has represented the Cape Cobras, Boland, Matabeleland Tuskers, Middlesex and Warwickshire. Neil also represented Scotland in the T20 format of the game. Neil is an ECB level 3 coach with years of coaching experience in all the various age groups. Neil’s mandate is to develop the general skill level of all our players and coaches, not just at the College but also at the Prep.

Neil will be assisted by Bradley Barnes, former KZN Dolphins and Cape Cobras player. Bradley is in the process of finishing the CSA level 3 coaching course.

  1. Developing our own

In order for College to be successful we need to ensure that Prep cricket is strong. This is the only sustainable way of ensuring long term success. By developing our base of players we are investing in our own success. We thus need to ensure that the Prep has access to the best possible facilities and coaching. Prep will be making use of the College turf wickets more often than in the past and as soon as the turf wicket is finished at Lutgensvale the Prep will take over the management of the field. Neil Carter, in his capacity as Bishops’ professional cricket coach, will also play an even bigger role in the nurturing and development of skills at the Prep.

  1. Establishing and maintaining a sustainable cricket outreach programme with schools from previously disadvantaged areas.

Programmes have been set up with two previously disadvantaged communities. Tygerberg CC in Ravensmead will benefit from an annual cricket equipment drive which will see Bishops Cricket assisting in the collection and purchasing of cricket equipment for the club. Heathfield Primary will benefit from using Bishops facilities and coaching expertise for specialised coaching sessions in the Steffan Coutts-Trotter Indoor Cricket Centre under the watchful eye of Neil Carter. In addition we support other Bishops fundraising initiatives such as K4K.
